Architecting Facebook's Brand Refresh In-Product
A platform-wide visual framework for Facebook's in-app brand. From audit to architecture to handoff.
Facebook shipped a brand refresh. The real work was getting it into the app.
In 2023, Facebook launched its first major brand evolution in over a decade. Announcing it was the easy part.
Inside the company, every product lead was handed the same mandate, bring this brand into the app. Every surface. Every team. Every visual.
Everyone hit the same wall. Where do we start?

You can't fix what you can't find.
The first thing I discovered, Facebook had no map of its own visual asset system.
Every illustration, icon, and animation lived buried inside a different team's surface, owned by a different engineer, undocumented centrally. Asking "what's already in production?" meant going to several engineering teams and excavating each one by hand.
The brand refresh had a launch date. The in-product effort didn't have a starting line.
So I started drawing the map.

The team was split. One side wanted an asset library. The other wanted a design system approach.
The team assembled to solve this was newly formed illustrators, art directors, and creative directors, most of whom came from agency work. Brilliant craftspeople. New to shipping inside a product organization at scale.
Half the room wanted an asset management system. A place to store the work, browse it, pull from it. The agency model, scaled up.
The other half the product side saw what was missing. A library hands teams the assets. It doesn't tell them which asset, when, or why. Hundreds of product teams would be left guessing…picking by taste, by guess, by whichever illustration looked closest to the moment they were designing for.
Both sides were right. The real question was, how do you apply visual assets to a design system?

So I figured it out.
The audit. The framework. The workshop that aligned eight disciplines. The pilot that proved it worked. The handoff to Foundations.
